MEEC/LA LUNA (MOON)
8 min
Choreographed and Performed by Norma Araiza
Music by Jorge Reyes

Duration: 8 minutes

Meec means moon in Yaqui language. However, this dance theatre piece has been inspired by a Nahuatl (Aztec) legend that tells about how the stars were born.

The principal characters of the legend are the precious and spoiled moon, and the fluorescent serpent. Both characters have a very great significance and symbolism within the different cultures of indigenous peoples of Mexico.

The focus on this solo piece is on the moon and her female characteristics. It shows, with a combination of dance styles, the universal perspective around the mythological and mysterious moon in relation to the cycles of women.

The piece is very stationary and emphasizes the work of the face, hands and feet as part of the detailed personality of this moon.
